Open House Advice – Less Is More

So, you’re getting ready for your Open House on Sunday.  Your Realtor has marketed your property for weeks, and is expecting a huge crowd.  You feel overwhelmed and excited.  “What will strangers think of my house”?  “Should I pull out the (pre-baby) oriental rug”?.  You decide to break out the fine china in the dining room, the Ralph Lauren towels in the bathroom, and anything else of  value that you can no longer use because of the kids.  (ah, the memories).

Well, before you go rummaging through the attic and risk getting a Hernia, stop and remember that LESS IS MORE.  People are coming to your house to assess the structure, size, and livability of the space.  They are not there to assess your things.  It’s normal to want to show people your best stuff, but your taste may not be theirs, and you risk putting some people off.

So, my advice is to scale down your space as much as possible.  Try not to have too many personal objects on display, and put away family photographs where possible.  Make sure everything is clean and tidy, and put away anything of value.

Isn’t it nice to find out you have LESS to do?

  • [...] Buyers don’t speak freely with their real estate professional when the owner is present.  In the November 15th post ‘Less Is More’, I advised not having personal effects around because it makes it difficult for the buyers to be objective, well you’re the most personal effect you have, so it is best to go away.    [...]
